Solberg Airport History Is One Of Attempted Expansion

In the 1960s, the Port Authority almost built New York's 4th metropolitan airport with 12,000-foot runways at Solberg. It took 1000 Hunterdon residents in 1967 and another 1500 in 1969 turning out in protest at the statehouse in Trenton to convince two Governors to nix the idea.

In 1990, Thor Solberg made a bid to move Linden Airport to Solberg. Linden wanted to close its airport for commercial redevelopment. The deal died only after Readington Township threatened Solberg with condemnation and Linden's mayor lost his re-election bid.

In the late '90's, Thor Solberg tried to build a major business jetport. Thousands turned out to protest at hearings at RVCC. The expansion was halted only when Readington Township again threatened condemnation and in 2002 the State swooped in and offered to purchase the airport. The Solbergs signed an agreement to sell the airport for $22M to the State. In 2004 the State withdrew the offer after the Solbergs held out for what the State considered to be an unjustifiably higher price.

In 2005, airport interests backed Township Committee candidate Jim Hunter. Hunter spent an unprecedented sum seeking a largely unpaid Township Committee seat. In violation of State law, Hunter has not disclosed his election financing.

In fall 2005, the Solbergs proposed to build a 5600' main runway and 1,000,000 square feet of hangar and office space. The proposal was made in negotiations with Readington Township, along with reported threats to spend whatever was necessary to unseat the Committee to get their way. The proposed expansion is sufficient to place Solberg Airport on par with Teterboro and Morristown. Read more at www.braac.org

The Hunterdon County Board Of Elections has set May 16th as the date for a referendum on Readington’s proposed $22M Bond Ordinance. If approved, the bond will be used to preserve the open space surrounding the airport and thereby block airport expansion. If voted down, Readington will get a jetport.

On May 16th, 2006 the bond passed by a margin of 55% to 45%.
