Hunterdon Review Accusations Fly In Readington Race (10/12/2005)

Julia Allen, 3-term Readington Township Committeewoman, lost the June 2005 primary to first-time candidate James Hunter. Allen re-entered the race as a write-in candidate in the general election. Hunter is owner of James Hunter Real Estate and Construction. Allen maintained that the election record showed that Hunter's contributors included James Hromaho, who is listed in the construction business and is an owner of some of the airport lands, and that additional developers and owners of Solberg Airport have been supporting Hunter's campaign. Hunter's supporters swamped township households with glossy brochures in the last weeks before the primary. Some of the campaign literature was financed by Americans for Job Security, a Virginia-based organization. Hunter said his name never appeared on the flyers, so "technically" the brochures were campaigning against Allen and Gatti and their policies, rather than supporting him as a candidate.

Star Ledger Readington Candidate Failed To File Finance Reports (2/3/2006)

James Hunter, the Readington Candidate who lost the general election to write-in candidate Julia Allen, has not filed two campaign finance reports, according to the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission. The state agency confirmed Hunter's 11-day pre-election filing and 20-day post-election filing of contributions and expenditures had not yet been turned in. One was due by Oct. 28, the other by Nov. 28. Hunter's campaign, which included glossy mailings, letters and automated phone calls to Readington residents, cost thousands, not hundreds, of dollars. "He doesn't want to report where his money came from," Allen said. "We're quite sure where it came from." Allen said she believes his money came from Thor Solberg and his supporters. Allen believes Lawrence Berger of Morristown, a business partner and legal adviser of the Solbergs who took part in negotiations, funded Hunter. "In all conversations ... he as much as says it's his money and threatens to continue spending the money to get us out of office, and by us I mean us collectively," Allen said.

Hunterdon County News In Readington Campaign Violations Raise Eyebrows Toward Airport (2/3/2006)

James Hunter, candidate for Readington Township Committee, failed to file campaign finance reports as required by state law. Mr. Hunter owns James Hunter Real Estate and Construction, Inc., which operates in Hunterdon and Warren Counties. This business was incorporated in March 2001 by a Clifton, NJ (Passaic County) accountant named Nicholas A. Lucarella. Lucarella became the registered agent of the corporation with an office at 400 Clifton Avenue, Clifton, NJ. At the time Hunter and Lucarella began a business association, Lucarella was under indictment (April 15, 2000) for assault, threats of violence, and threats to kill. Lucarella was subsequently convicted (November 27, 2001) of these charges. James Hunter had a very public reminder of Lucarella's character on March 5, 2003 when, as reported in the New York Times and other media including radio, Lucarella was arrested for the attempted murder, conspiracy, and aggravated assault of his former attorney. Lucarella was indicted on these charges by a grand jury in Monmouth County on June 23, 2003, and is currently free on $2.5 million bail awaiting trial. The Monmouth County Prosecutor noted that, "investigators had to sift through 'layer upon layer' of organized-crime activity to make the connections" between Lucarella and another alleged perpetrator, the two of whom were introduced "by mobster friends they shared." Despite this, Lucarella continues to this day to conduct corporate business for James Hunter Real Estate and Construction, Inc. both as an accountant and as an agent. On April 4, 2005, two years after his most recent arrest and indictment, Lucarella as Managing Agent of James Hunter Real Estate and Construction, Inc., accepted service of a lawsuit against the company at the registered office at the Clifton address. It appears that the reservations of the Judge Richard Plechner concerning Hunter's future were well taken. When confronted with this information, Mr. Hunter downplays its importance, and comments that, "He is only my accountant."
