Significant progress made towards preventing the expansion of Solberg Airport.

In the May 16 special election, a clear majority of Readington voters ratified a $22 million bond for preservation of open space surrounding the Solberg Airport and the airport's development rights. They sent an unambiguous message that they did not want a jetport.

On August 7, the Township made a $21.7 million appraisal-based offer to purchase 624 acres of open space, and airport development rights. The Solbergs would not negotiate on the offer or state a position on which mediation could be based, and on September 15th the Township initiated legal proceedings to complete the transaction under the New Jersey eminent domain statutes.    Read more.

Solberg Business Partner To Mayor Shamey: We’ll Spend As Much As Needed To Buy The Township Committee.

As a part of his presentation April 3rd on Solberg Airport, Mayor Gerry Shamey played a recording of his conversation with Solberg business partner, attorney, and real estate developer Larry Berger, in which Berger threatened that the Solbergs "would spend as much as necessary" to gain control of the Township Committee. Taxes: Which will cost more to a homeowner the $22M bond or an expanded jetport?

The expanded jetport will cost more. Sound unlikely? Considering that airport expansion will result in $30,000,000 in additional capital costs and $1,200,000 in annual expenses to Readington Township, the impact on a house assessed at $400,000 is estimated at $308/year of increased taxes for a jetport. Compare this to the town's estimate of $60/year for the bond to fund acquisition of the open space surrounding the airport.
